Pet Surgery

Pet surgery is often a stressful experience for dog or cat owners. At Holy Family Veterinary Hospital in Fort Pierce, FL, we want you to know that your pet will receive the highest level of care possible if an operation is needed. We have the surgical tools and knowledge to perform most routine types of pet surgery in-house.

Anesthesia for Pet Surgery

Most types of general pet surgery will require anesthesia. We will run some pre-surgery tests on your pet before the day of the operation, to make sure that there won’t be any complications from the anesthetic. During the surgery, your pet’s vital signs are monitored by a trained professional, including their oxygen levels, temperature, respiration, blood pressure, and pulse.

Anesthesia is generally a requirement to perform the most common types of pet surgery, including:

  • Tumor removal
  • Setting a broken bone
  • Removal of a foreign object
  • Spay and neuter procedures

Caring for Your Animal after Pet Surgery

When it’s time for your pet to go home after surgery, our staff will explain all the at-home care procedures needed for your pet to enjoy a full recovery. This will include limiting your pet’s activity level and playtime, to ensure that they don’t tear open the incision. If you have a cat recovering from surgery, you’ll be advised to put their favorite climbing objects away for the recovery period.

Your veterinarian may also prescribe some pain relief medication and antibiotics to help ensure that an infection does not set in at the surgery site. We will also schedule a follow-up appointment with you within a few days of the surgery, just to make sure that your pet is healing and recovering well, and that there are no complications.

Pet surgery can be scary for pet owners but will do everything possible to make the experience as stress-free as possible for you and your dog or cat.
